In other words, we are all individuals and we are all blessed with the intellect and freedom to make judgements and choices. And, fortunately, we are all different so we don’t all chose the same partner, the same clothes, the same house or the same mode of transport.

A recent Daily Telegraph Saturday motoring supplement featured the ‘100 UGLIEST CARS OF ALL TIME as chosen by Daily Telegraph readers’. You might think that I am offended that no BMW product ended up on this list - but I am not. In fact I welcome it. If everyone liked our cars it would suggest to me that they were becoming bland.

The thing I dislike, though, is car commentators proffering their view on a car’s appearance. The dismissal of a car as ‘ugly’, ‘poorly resolved’ or even gorgeous has become commonplace in the assessment of any car. But why should their opinion on design be relevant? After all, many commentators aren’t the most sartorially elegant so how can they comment on style? I have eyes, magazines print plenty of pictures – I can make my own mind up whether I like it or not. As a reader, I look to a journalist for an assessment of the car’s performance, handling, ride, economy, comfort, value for money and so on; in other words all the things I cannot glean from pictures.

I find design very interesting, but I cannot claim to understand its intricacies…and neither, in my view, do any of the journalists I know. I love the look of Bang and Olafson Hi-Fi…but I’ve no idea whether it is any good aurally. I’m not a great fan of No 5 by Jackson Pollock but someone paid over $100 million for it. Who am I to criticize such a purchase and judge it not to be artistically significant enough to justify this price?

Back to the safer ground of motoring, there are cars I like and those I loathe, just like anyone else I suppose. Looking at it from a non-BMW perspective, high up on the Telegraph’s list of ‘ugly’ cars was the Citroen 2CV. Personally I like the look of it, so did the millions of Frenchmen who bought it in their droves.

By contrast the article highlights the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and Jaguar XJS – none of which would grace my drive, irrespective of who I worked for. But one’s man’s meat etc……clearly quite a few people would disagree with me because they have bought one. Personally, I think the Jaguar S-Type is one of the most poorly-resolved pieces of design in recent history and yet some patriotic commentators suggested it had all the classic Jaguar design grace and panache. Hail the new king of the Executive car market they said. If ever there was an example of how the press failed to get it right, the S-Type is it. But, again, that’s only my opinion.

So, next time you read an article in which the journalist makes a judgement on car design, do yourself a favour: ignore it. Unless, that is, that you personally know the writer in question and have seen his or her choice of clothing, curtain material and lampshades. The truth is that their weighty counsel is nothing but a display of whether they like it or not, not whether you will.

 Comments

BMW 3 Series - the best just got better

It’s a week since I returned from the international launch and media first drive of the new BMW 3 Series and I thought that this was an opportune time to judge the initial impressions of the car.

This car has a big job to do. With recent updates from the immediate competitors – Audi A4 and Mercedes Benz C Class – the compact executive market place has never been so crowded. It’s also never offered such a wide and diverse range of models, variants and specifications to enable discerning buyers to select the car that perfectly, and without compromise, fits their lifestyle. To highlight this, the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and Touring is available with a choice of 11 engines, six in the Saloon and five in the Touring, and in a total of 25 different models.

On the launch, the journalists had the opportunity of driving the new 330d with its all-new 3.0-litre diesel engine. This new engine develops 245hp and 520Nm of torque. Impressive numbers and to put it into context, it’s not that many years ago that BMW’s famous M cars were delivering similar horsepower output and far less torque, and this engine is a diesel! Alongside it was the 335i, powered by the twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre engine that has the accolade of winning the coveted International Engine of the Year for the last two years in a row.

So, what’s the reaction? I guess that it is best summed up as ‘the best just got better’. But those are my words. Car magazine said; “The A4 is the new kid on the block but it still can’t get close to the 3-series dynamically. Which leaves the Merc C-class to fight its corner. The BMW’s new tech gives it an advantage, it’s a lot more interesting to look at inside (despite the limited cockpit changes), and it’s quicker, cheaper, greener and more economical than a C320 CDI. Case closed." See the link here - http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/Drives/Search-Results/First-drives/BMW-330d-facelift-CAR-review/

Autocar were equally positive - "In 330d guise, it feels invincible." See the link here - http://www.autocar.co.uk/CarReviews/FirstDrives/BMW-3-Series-330d-SE/234767/
And finally The Car Enthusiast, one of the web sites that we know industry commentators read and respect, said; “Fans of the current 3 Series will relish the new car's updates. They know which side their bread is buttered on”. See the link here - http://www.carenthusiast.com/roadtests.html?mode=article&id=2911.

So, successful then? Absolutely, and I see no reason why the new car won’t continue the sales success that all previous 3 Series models have enjoyed. With over 12 million 3 Series sold since launch in 1977 and approximately 45 per cent of all BMW’s sold in the UK wearing a 3 Series badge, this new car has a big shoes to fill.

 Comments

A last hurrah for the Beijing Olympics

I know that this is meant to be a blog about the automotive industry but having been away for a while, it would be remiss of me not to recognise the passing of one of the world’s greatest spectacles - the Beijing Olympic Games.

Prior to the Beijing games, the news was full of horror stories of poor air quality and slime in the sailing water let alone the human rights issues, all that threatened to derail this most important sporting occasion. However, credit where credit is due, the Chinese pulled it off without any apparent hitch. Better than that, they provided the world with a spectacular event of epic proportions. And I’m sure that the soon to opened Para-Olympics will be just as good.

And this has got me wondering about what London 2012 is going to be like.

The firework holders from Beijing’s closing ceremony had only just started cooling down when the UK government’s expectation management started. We shouldn’t expect the same extravaganza as had been witnessed in China - London 2012 is going to a far less grand affair. Not surprising as we’re expecting to pay less than half that was spent in Beijing. We also shouldn’t expect the torch to undertake a world tour. Again, not surprising as it caused so much controversy and rioting this time around. Instead, it’ll visit many of Britain’s quintessentially picture-postcard villages – how quaint!

And what will happen when the torch arrives at the new stadium, currently under construction in East London?

The patriotic part of me wants the London 2012 Olympics to be a games we can all be proud off, with UK medals galore and the regeneration of one of the most deprived parts of London thrown in for good measure.

The realist in me sees it another way.

As our chosen athlete arrives with the torch aloft ready to enter to the adulation and applause of the packed stadium, they will asked to go round the block a few more times because the stadium isn’t quite finished yet. Once they get into the stadium, the gas that powers the traditional perpetual flame will be far too scarce and too expensive, so we’ll have to settle for something a little greener, maybe a low voltage light bulb?

Once the games get under way, I can see our ludicrous Health and Safety officials taking over. “So Mr Athlete, you’ve got a javelin and you want to throw it from this line towards the crowd at the other end of the stadium? Can’t allow that I’m afraid, more than my job’s worth.”

And beach volleyball just isn’t going to work on any of the UK beaches. Have you seen the summer we’ve had? And they’d all have to be wearing ‘Kiss me quick’ hats!

I know that this sound cynical and very defeatist and I wish that I could be more positive about the outlook but you’ve only got to look at other government projects to see where I’m coming from. The Dome, need I say more.

So let’s just celebrate the success of our athletes and hopefully our papa-Olympians too, and keep our fingers crossed that with the minimum of government interference, the UK can pull off an Olympics that we too can be proud of.

 Comments

The profile of champions

Like everybody in the UK, I’ve been watching the Olympics, cheering on and celebrating the success of the UK sports men and women. For once, it’s a great British success story and rightly, the entire country is behind each and every athlete as they strive for success.

One of the interesting things it highlights to me is the power of the media to create overnight celebrities from competitors in what would normally be considered niche sports. Under normal circumstances, nobody would pay any attention to the World Cycling Championships, or the World Rowing Championships, or whatever both are actually called. However, because the Olympics commands the world’s focus for a fortnight, hero’s are created. I guess that it also helps if you’ve got a good British name like Bradley Wiggins – you simply couldn’t make that name up.

Now I started this by saying that it is right that we should get behind our competitors and celebrate their success, but don’t you think this should apply across the board. The reason for saying this is the competitors outside of Olympic sports, some of whom are the most anonymous World Champions the UK has.

Andy Priaulx is the best example of this I know. If Touring Cars was an Olympic sport, you’d see his face in the Olympic highlights television programme and on the front cover of every newspaper. But clearly it’s not.

Who’s Andy Priaulx I hear you say. That’s exactly my point. Andy Priaulx is the three-time FIA World Touring Car Champion having previously been European Touring Car Champion the year before. He’s the only Brit ever to win three consecutive FIA Championships in a row and has, in the past, been called the Michael Schumacher of Touring Cars, such has been his success and domination of the sport. And yet very few people have ever heard of him and he never gets stopped in the street and asked for his autograph.

Why? Television coverage or, in his case, lack of it. Although it’s the most entertaining form of motorsport I know, coverage of World Touring Cars is relegated to Eurosport rather than prime-time BBC so you’ll never stumble upon it or him. Which is a shame because unlike any Olympians, racing drivers actually risk their lives every time they get in a car, such is their dedication.

So when you’re watching the sailing, or rowing, or BMW biking for that matter, spare a thought for the UK’s unsung Champions. Better still, tune into Eurosport and cheer on one of the UK’s greatest champions that you’ve never heard of.

 Comments

Information on a recall

Yesterday the internet was brimming with news of an impending recall of over 200,000 BMW cars, including 2006 model year 3 Series, 2004-06 model year 5 Series and 2004-06 model year X3 vehicles. Engineers had found that the passenger seat sensor mat may have become damaged during vehicle use. In essence, if the air bag warning lamp, and the passenger air bag “on-off” lamp are illuminated simultaneously, there may be an issue that needs addressing.

However, what wasn’t clear from any of the reporting was that this issue is isolated to US and Canadian-specification cars. For those of you reading this in the UK, this doesn’t affect UK cars so you needn’t worry. Cars built to an American and Canadian specification have a different airbag system fitted and the components affected by this recall aren’t fitted to UK-specification cars.

So there you have it, clarification just in case you own one of these cars outside of the Americas and might be starting to worry….

 Comments

A road too far...

Back from two weeks holiday and you’ll be pleased to know that I’m not going to moan on about how difficult it is to get back into your work after a period away, or about the state of my desk when I returned to it. It looked like Armageddon had struck by the way, but that’s by the by.

However, having spent the best part of two weeks driving through France, I’d like to pose a question. Why is it that when you leave Folkstone and arrive in Calais, driving is suddenly pleasurable and conversely, when the White Cliffs come into view, driving instantly becomes stressful again? It never ceases to amaze me how the two experiences differ.

I know that I’m starting to sound like my a miserable old man but leaving home, the M3 is unpredictable at the best of times followed by the good old M25 that is as predictable as our current August weather – always bad!. Traffic jams, start stop traffic, dirty and inefficient service stations and a general lack of consideration for other drivers. Arrive en France and the roads are empty, free flowing and pleasurable. And then there is their road surface. They dig up and replace the sort of surface that we’d be proud of in the UK – it’s almost farcical. And once you’re ready for a break, pull into one of their frequent service stations and, while at lunchtime they may be busy, you’re greeted by a wide selection of reasonably priced food.

Some argue that it’s better because of the Peage road charging system in France. I suspect it’s a contributing factor but certainly not the only one because over half of our journey was done on non-payment motorway. I suspect that the size of France is also a contributing factor. The fact that it’s five times as large as the UK and has approximately the same population should mean that the traffic is less dense. However, I was travelling on the first Saturday of the French get away when most of northern France travels south. This, combined with the number of English registered cars that on occasion out-numbered French registered cars, probably puts the kybosh on that argument too.

I’d love to know what the answer is – if you’ve got a theory, please let me know. Then we’ll do our best to try and apply it in the UK and make it a pleasure rather than a hassle to drive on this side of the Channel.

 Comments

Green credentials

On top of the excitement of the British International Motorshow, this week has also seen yet further recognition of both BMW and MINI’s green credentials, both from highly-respected independent sources.

The start of the week saw the release of survey findings from leading greener motoring website www.cleangreencars.co.uk that found that BMW Group's products – BMW and MINI – are the cleanest premium products on the market. Thanks to the much-talked-about EfficientDynamics technologies, BMW’s average emissions rate fell 11.34 per cent in the period between January and June 2008 while average MINI emissions fell 9.44 per cent in the same period. This means that average emissions from BMW’s model range now stands at 161.6g/km and MINI 139.6g/km – inside the all-important 140g/km target.

By comparison, BMW’s competitors – Audi, Mercedes Benz and Lexus were well off the pace, with Audi recording a 177g/km average and Mercedes 192g/km. Even Lexus with their hybrid-based model line-up could only manage a 194g/km average. Proof, surely, that you can have your cake and eat it.

And following on from this, the end of Press Day at the Motorshow saw What Car? magazines inaugural Green Awards in the Green Car Pavilion. Having had contenders in almost every category, BMW and MINI walked off with three of the 10 awards – Best Sports car for the MINI Cooper S, Best Executive car for the BMW 318d ES and a special Editors award in recognition of the range-wide benefits that EfficientDynamics technologies have brought. To underline the range-wide effects, the winner of the Green Executive Car category was a bit of a foregone conclusion – all three nominees were BMW models – the 318d ES, the 520d and the 530d!

And that’s all for a couple of weeks – holidays beckon. Why not subscribe and you’ll be notified as soon as I’m back in the chair.

 Comments

Motorshow Press Day - an altenative view

Another British International Motorshow Press Day has passed, and normality is returning. So what’s the verdict? Well that’s going to have to wait until the final visitor numbers are in and the fat lady has well and truly sung. However, as far as Press Day is concerned, there seemed to be a genuine buzz around the place, the lack of which had been one of the main criticisms two years ago.

Many months ago, the SMMT, the organisers of the show, decided they’d create a little more atmosphere by adding a sprinkling of the public via a high-priced entry ticket. Uproar in the journalist ranks ensued with the hacks suggesting that these potential customers would somehow get in the way of the media who were trying to do their job. Well, thankfully, it didn’t turn out that way. Both happily co-existed in the halls together, one able to do their job, the other able to see new product reveals at close hand and hoover up as much corporate hospitality as they could to justify their £100 ticket price.

And it’s a good show, on the whole. True, it’s not the size of the A-grade shows of Paris, Frankfurt, Detroit and Geneva that the London show aspires to be but that does make it easy to navigate. And with a good number of genuine world reveals, outdoor interactive events, concerts and a boat show too, there is plenty for the potential buyer or the family on a holiday day out to see.

So, a personal highlight? Well, that’s a difficult one bearing in mind the diversity of the manufacturer offerings and the other attractions. On the new cars, the Peugeot 308 RCZ’s an interesting car – very unusual to look at but interestingly quirky at the same time. The Focus RS is sure to sell well too… to a certain type of customer! Also great to see a good smattering of super cars, both new and old. They’re sure to be popular with the younger visitors. A lot of the new, greener technologies are also very interesting too – more of that in tomorrow’s instalment.

My lasting memory though? Having stood up for 12 hours on the trot, the best bit is walking out of the exit leaving behind the DJ-inspired music blasting out at too many decibels, taking my shoes off and allowing my ever-so-painful feet to recover and realising that we’ve got another 730 days before we’ve got to do it all over again. I’m getting old!

 Comments

A precursor to the London Motorshow

So, the UK motor industry is buzzing with all of the announcements prior to the London Motorshow. For those who have managed to avoid the millions of pounds spent in pre-event advertising, the London International Motorshow is the UK motor industry’s biennial opportunity to show its wares to the audience of car buyers. Following Press Day next Tuesday, it’s open until Sunday 3 August.

But how many car buyers are really there? Two years ago, the Docklands-based show drew over 400,000 people in its ten days of opening. Not a bad number some might argue but not a patch on the million-plus visitors that some other international shows achieve. But in this day and age, how much of the buying process is geared around actually seeing and feeling a car at a show?

Google would argue not a lot. At a recent presentation, they confirmed that their research suggests that 43 per cent of buyers now reach their car purchase decision by online research alone. And based on the ever increasing use of the internet, this trend can only increase too. Using this logic, it will only be a couple of years before more buyers than not select the car they want to buy without ever leaving their PC.

If this is the case, one could argue that in a few years time, this biennial event should be held in Second Life to attract the majority of new car buyers. As interesting as this sounds to a New Media professional, I’m not entirely convinced that the world is quite ready for that just yet.

Interested in the Motorshow? Why not subscribe or call back next week for a view from Press Day.

 Comments

Lies, lies and pure statistics

The newspapers are today full of information about a survey conducted by Auto Trader confirming that BMW drivers are the worst on the road. From 21,000 of their readers surveyed, 46 per cent thought that BMW drivers were worst. No news there then. People have complained about BMW drivers for years. To my mind, probably more interesting is that 23 per cent believed that Subaru drivers were the worst and 18 per cent believed that Porsche drivers were the worst.

Now, this is where I start to take issue with the findings because if there’s one thing for sure, BMW sells far more cars than Subaru and Porsche. So, by the law of probability, you’re far more likely to see a ‘bad’ BMW driver than either of the other two. Therefore, to give a true reflection of who is really the worst driver, I think it’s only fair if the figures are sales-volume weighted. In this way, we can compare apples with apples.

In 2007, BMW sold 121,575 cars. In that same period, Subaru sold 6,051 cars and Porsche 8,533. On this basis, you are 20 times more likely to see a ‘bad’ BMW driver as opposed to a ‘bad’ Subaru driver and nearly 15 times more likely to see a ‘bad’ BMW driver as opposed to a ‘bad’ Porsche driver.

Clearly I’m not suggesting that every BMW is driven by halo-endowed occupants but using this slightly more level playing field, I’d suggest that if your looking to point fingers at a certain car brand and its drivers, there are far worse culprits than the usual suspect.

And on a completely different subject, thank you to Mr Darling for pulling back from the additional 2p per litre fuel duty that was due to be levied in October. However, quite how he’s going to cope with only 50p in every litre that each and every motorist puts in their fuel tank is beyond me!!

 Comments

The best just got better.

The motoring internet sites and magazines are full of information on the new BMW 3 Series. As per the blog-post yesterday, this shouldn’t have happened until this coming Friday but that’s a minor detail. The information’s out there now to almost unanimous agreement that the new car takes the game on to the next level.

And this is at a time of mixed fortunes for competitors. The new Mercedes Benz C-Class has been welcomed in some quarters. By contrast, the Audi A4 Saloon, often seen as the direct competitor to the 3 Series, has not hit the spot with many independent editorial commentators.

The outgoing 3 Series was tested by Autocar magazine in March 2008 when the BMW 320d just pipped the Mercedes C-Class to win the test, thanks to its EfficientDynamics technologies. Of the C-Class, Autocar concluded, “As the best built, best handling and next best looking its strengths looked overwhelming. At least they did until we turned the key and discovered that it is undone by its engine.” But having pitted the 3 Series against (and in final order) the Mercedes Benz, Ford Mondeo, Audi A4, Renault Laguna, Alfa Romeo159, VW Passat, Lexus IS220 and Saab 9-3, Autocar concluded, “Were it not in black and white, we would simply not believe that the car with the best performance has an equally huge advantage in emissions and economy. But it does and, installed in the already pretty wondrous 3 Series chassis, it is more than enough to ensure victory here.”

And that was the outgoing model. Next month sees the first driving reviews of the new car and it goes on sale in September. Time will tell but it’s probable that the benchmark that every competitor failed to beat with the outgoing car will be even further out of reach come the autumn.

 Comments

Another broken enbargo...

Another product announcement, another broken embargo. This time it was the announcement for the new BMW 3 Series Saloon and Touring. If all had gone well, this information wouldn’t have been available until this coming Friday. But it was broken, this time over a week before its official unveiling. I can’t remember the last time that a new product was announced without the embargo being broken somewhere along the line.

Historically, the issue of embargos and the releasing of new information was dealt with on a ‘gentleman’s agreement’ basis between PR’s and Editors with the latter agreeing not to publish information until a certain date. This enabled Editors of long-lead publications to publish information soon after the embargo, benefiting both the PR and the Editor. And it worked, generally.

The internet-age has changed all that. PRs and website Editors don’t yet have the same relationship as that which has existed for years between PRs and the traditional media. In addition, and vitally importantly, the internet’s incessant need for as much information as possible, as quickly as possible, means that competition to be the first to publish has never been greater.

And PRs need to wake up to this new world. The requirements of the internet and a monthly magazine are completely different and the embargos can’t work in this day and age. Why not simply release all the information on a certain date and let the publications sort it out. Well, no reason at all, apart from the deluge of calls from Editors of monthly magazines I’d get. But with web-traffic going through the roof and traditional media circulations generally falling, surely you’ve got to work to the needs of the majority?

Enjoyed reading this? Why not subscribe…..

 Comments

Shattering the illusion?

Every man remembers the first car that, as a young boy, he lusted after. Depending how old you are, it could be an early Aston Martin or an example of Italian exotica. Whatever the car, it sticks in your mind. For me, it was the first BMW E30 M3. At the time, this was a car that reset all existing perceptions of an ‘affordable’ sports car. In race guise, it remains the world’s most successful Touring Car of all time.

For the lucky few, which I count myself as one, the opportunity arises to fulfil the aspiration. The car was launched in the late 1980’s and at the time, I worked at a BMW dealership. We ran one as a demonstrator for a period and when the opportunity arose to get behind the wheel, I jumped at the chance. And I wasn’t disappointed. It was as fast, as free-revving, as dynamic and as fun to drive as I imagined it would be. Curiosity and childhood fantasy satisfied.

A good few years have passed since then and the other day, another opportunity arose to drive one. With petrol still flowing through the veins, it was an opportunity too good to miss. However, in those same years technology has move forwards leaps and bounds. Modern cars are now much, much easier to drive and they have considerably more power than their predecessors – the new M3 has twice the power of the first generation. They also feel a lot more solid. In short, there’s no comparison. To say that it was disappointing is overstating it but it certainly wasn’t the same aspirational experience.

And the morale of this story? The romantic recollections of driving these cars in your youth simply aren’t matched by the driving experience today. On this basis, if ever you get the opportunity to drive the car you lusted after as a lad, think twice before accepting – it might just shatter the illusion.

 Comments

Two ends of a MINI spectrum

Just returned from two days at the MINI John Cooper Works media launch at Donnington Park. While the weather tried to dampen spirits, 211hp in a front-wheel-drive car is always a lot of fun. And the MINI, either in Hatch, Clubman or Challenge race car forms, just makes people giggle. It’s infectious. Whether driving on the roads of the Midlands and Lincolnshire or an area of Donnington’s Launch Pad, you can’t help but have fun with it. It’s nimble, it’s agile, it’s everything that a lot of larger cars aspire to be but can’t ever hope to achieve. Most car’s are functional, the MINI John Cooper Works has genuine personality.

It also has an environmental personality. Not only do Hatch and Clubman models feature BMW’s EfficientDynamics fuel-saving and emissions-reducing technology, yesterday saw the announcement that MINI is testing electrically-powered cars to investigate alternative drive technologies of the future. Several hundred MINIs are being built and will be evaluated over the next 12-18 months to refine the technology. To plagiarise the strap line of a well known mobile phone provider, ‘The future’s bright, the future’s MINI’.

In these people’s eyes, this weekend’s announcement of the new BMW 7 Series, BMW largest, most luxurious car, couldn’t have come at a worse time. Well, maybe surprisingly, I beg to differ. Although the car is the largest car that BMW builds, it’s also the ‘greenest’ of any of its competitors and considerably more efficient than some smaller cars. Up until now, a large, luxury car delivering nearly 40mpg would have been considered an oxymoron, but not now.

To put this is perspective, when the new BMW 730d arrives in the autumn, it will consume the same amounts of fuel and emit the same CO2 as the Mercedes Benz C320CDi. This is a car two segments below the 7 Series and the same size as BMW’s 3 Series models. And nobody is suggesting that suddenly these mid-size cars are gas guzzlers and are politically incorrect. And the reason for this efficiency? BMW’s Efficient Dynamics technologies that combine optimised internal combustion engineering and lightweight materials to deliver class leading performance, fuel consumption and emissions. See a video of it here.

The new car also boasts a host of new safety and driver aid technologies, some of which are sure to filter through to mainstream models in time. Without luxury cars to debut and demonstrate such technologies, these advances would surely cost more money and take more time before they appeared in the mainstream. So the question isn’t how can anybody afford such a car in today’s economic climate. The real question is how far cars in the mainstream would progress without the larger luxury end of the market. Not far I suggest.

 Comments

Formula One comes to Manchester

What have motorsport and Manchester got in common, apart from the obvious letter of the alphabet? I suspect those hardened Mancunians will find historic links between the two but the one that’s pertinent today is Formula One. Today (Friday) not only sees the practice sessions of the Formula One Grand Prix at Silverstone, but more importantly, especially if you live in or around Manchester, the opening of the BMW Sauber Formula One Team Pit Lane Park at the Trafford Centre (4-6 July).

As the rest of the country watches the likes of Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica race on the box, local residents can watch their own Formula One Grand Prix. Well, sort of. With FIA World Touring Car Championship ace Augusto Farfus demonstrating the BMW Sauber F1 car and local hero Matt Howsen driving his Formula BMW race car in the specially-constructed arena, you’ll have all of the thrills of motor racing without all of the infamous traffic problems of getting into, and out of, Silverstone.

And this isn’t just for petrol heads. The Pit Lane Park caters for the whole family with children able to race BMW miniatures against each other, with the winner of each heat going up against Augusto Farfus on a radio-controlled circuit.

Own a BMW but with less power than the Formula One car? Present your key fob to fast track your way through any queues upon arrival.

If, like me, you live too far from Manchester then not to worry, the event takes place every year. Fingers crossed next year it will be closer to us...!

 Comments

Celebrating the M1

I’ve always believed that a company’s heritage should be celebrated occasionally. After all, a successful past if often a good basis for a successful future. And one of the key highlights of BMW’s heritage is motorsport, competing at the highest level in almost all disciplines, from Touring Cars to rallying, from small single-seaters to Formula One.

The M1 Procar series is one of those highlights. The road-going M1 of the late 1970’s was the first model designed and developed by BMW Motorsport GmbH, later to become BMW M, engineers of the current M3 and M5 models. Powered by a 3.5-litre engine from the then BMW M635CSi, it used twin overhead cams and four valves per cylinder to deliver 277bhp. Clothed in a fibreglass body, it offered super car levels of performance.

The race version, the M1 Procar, was used as a one-make series that featured as a precursor to the Formula One races of the time. At the Grand Prix, the five fastest drivers from Friday practice earned themselves a drive in the M1 race. The 15 remaining 500 hp machines were piloted by hungry young hopefuls. The most famous M1 Procar must, however, be the car painted by Andy Warhol. Created as part of BMW’s Art Car series, Warhol’s creation now sits alongside works by Hockney, Calder and Lichtenstein.

The reason for this trip down memory lane? The announcement yesterday that the M1 Procar race cars will once again support a Grand Prix at Hockenheim on 19th and 20th July with a field of ten cars. A handful of past masters are set to line up for the two show races supporting the German Grand Prix. Marc Surer will be joined by Jacques Laffite, Dieter Quester, Christian Danner, Harald Grohs and Prince Leopold of Bavaria. Jochen Neerpasch will be at the wheel of the Andy Warhol BMW M1 Procar. His co-driver will be Frank Stella who also created an Art Car – a BMW 3.0 CSL which raced at Le Mans in 1976. Any petrol heads up for a trip to Germany in a couple of weeks??…..

 Comments

The story-go-round

I’ve always been fascinated by the way in which a news story reappears on a number of occasions after their original burst. Weeks, months and sometimes years pass between the outings of a story that is resurrected by a journalist, often for the same reason as their predecessor resurrected it, and their predecessor before that.

A good example of this relates to BMW’s High Security cars. Every time anybody of any note is attacked, hijacked or shot at, we are deluged by requests for in-depth information on how these people have, or will now go about, protecting themselves. Without question, the conversation starts along the lines of “Is it like something James Bond drives?” before we get down to a more serious discourse.

More recently, the reoccurring conversation revolves, unsurprisingly, around sustainable transport. Commentators have become fixated with how car companies are coping with the diametrically opposed challenges of increasing performance and, at the same time, reducing CO2 emissions and improving economy. Fortunately, we’re very well placed. BMW and MINI EfficientDynamics technologies are making the most of the conventional internal combustion engine, delivering double-digit percentage improvements over outgoing models.

That’s before we start looking at hybrid technology, which might come at some point. The future is, however, hydrogen and this is the reoccurring story of the moment. Since bringing a small fleet of hydrogen-powered cars to the UK in mid-2007, the story has revolved and revolved. Most recently, it arrived back with the ‘launch’ of the Honda FCX. BMW was the first to line-build a hydrogen-powered car last year. This time, Honda has announced they’re the first to sell such a car. And with a predicted 10 – 15 years before these cars are predicted to become a reality on our streets in Europe, the story has got many more rotations to go yet….

 Comments

An introduction to Blogging

Like many new bloggers, I've always looked on to this new world with a lack of understanding and a combination of fear and trepidation. After a few years of sitting on the fence, I now wonder what all the fuss was about. As the recently-appointed New Media PR Manager for BMW and MINI UK - the first New Media PR Manager in the UK automotive industry - it was something that I should have done years ago. Yesterday was spent at the PR Week New Media forum and a fascinating presentation by Drew Benvie of Hotwire PR on the basics of blogging convinced me to start.

So where to start? I always find the beginning works well. Having spent over 20 years in the motor industry, from car sales to Formula One, from customer service to PR, the one thing I understand well is that the industry is not short of news. There is a constant deluge of information, internally from engineers and experts to external sources - motoring magazines, newspapers and a plethora of websites and other blogs. There's also not a shortage of people interested in cars and the wider motor industry. And on the basis that you've found my blog, that probably makes you one of them.

This won't be PR fluff - the world is full of that and doesn't need anymore. It'll look into issues and subjects that affect the motoring world - some mainstream, some niche - and generate debate. With a slant, but not totally biased, towards BMW and MINI (it's my job after all!!), I'll also have a look at what's being said about these brands and competitors in the mainstream media.

And occasionally, we'll stray off piste. An interest in innovative New Media is also matched with an interest in 'donning my tweeds and going clay pigeon shooting. This, combined with a passion for my 1973 Massey Ferguson tractor, makes for an eclectic mix. Think Tomorrows World meets The Archers and you're not a million miles away.

There, started. Much, much more to follow, starting early next week.

 Comments
